Dates Announced for Fourth Annual Art in Transit Judged Competition

Winning artist will receive $1,000 first prize and have their work displayed on Bay Transit bus

Bay Transit and the RAL Art Center have announced the dates for the Fourth Annual Art in Transit judged competition. Artists throughout the Northern Neck, Middle Peninsula, and Richmond area will be invited to participate in the fourth edition of the regional Art in Transit contest when the call for entries is announced in January.

The deadline for entries and art submissions to the RAL Art Center in Kilmarnock has been expanded to multiple dates next April to encourage participation. Artists will be able to submit their artwork beginning on Saturday, April 27th, 2024, as well as Sunday, April 28th, or Monday, April 29th, from 10 AM and 12 PM. “Each year, we have received more entries from across the region and wanted to make it easier for people to travel to Kilmarnock to drop them off,” said RAL Art Center Executive Director Sharon Stone. “Last year’s first place winner, Sarah Marshall Elliott, is from Richmond. We want to make sure that it is convenient as possible for artists from across the region to participate, so we’ve added dates for them to drop off their entries.”

Next year’s award winners will be recognized at the 2024 Art in Transit reception and awards ceremony on Friday night, May 31st, 2024, from 5 until 7 PM. “The prizes for the Fourth Annual Art in Transit winners have been increased,” noted Bay Transit Director Ken Pollock. “In 2024, the first prize will be $1,000, with the second-place winner receiving a check for $750, and the third-place winner receiving $500,” Pollock added. The culmination of the awards ceremony will once again occur when a copy of the first-place entry is unveiled on the side of a Bay Transit bus.

Demand Surges for Bay Transit’s New Freedom Program Services

New Freedom is a transportation service providing seniors and individuals with disabilities the ability to attend medical appointments, shop, work and attend social and recreational events even for travel outside of Bay Transit’s service area and/or service hours. Participants pay a nominal fee for each round trip.  For round trips of fifty miles or less, there is a five-dollar fare.  For round trip journeys greater than fifty miles the fare is only ten dollars.

Katherine Newman, Bay Transit’s New Freedom Program Manager, has been managing Bay Transit’s New Freedom program since 2013 and is a passionate advocate for program participants.  New Freedom is funded through a Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grant to serve all twelve counties in Bay Transit’s service area.  Because these federal funds are limited, program participation is limited to not more than two round trip rides per month.  A partnership with the MedCarry Volunteer Transportation program supplements New Freedom to help address additional demand.   “Individuals of any age with disabilities qualify to participate in New Freedom whether they have a short-term disability such as a broken leg or they are rehabilitating after surgery,” Newman said.  “Those with long-term disabilities, mental health disabilities, with mobility issues or chronic health issues are also eligible to participate.”  About ninety percent of New Freedom trips are outside of Bay Transit’s service area to typical destinations such as the VA Medical Centers in Richmond and Hampton, regional hospitals in Newport News and for medical services in Fredericksburg, Richmond, Williamsburg, and Norfolk.

For more information about Bay Transit’s New Freedom program, to inquire about driving for Bay Transit, or volunteering to be a MedCarry driver, call or email Katherine Newman today at (804) 824-2546 or knewman@bayaging.org.

Bay Transit Covid-19 Service Update

Bay Transit continues to operate as normal:

  • We are conducting employee health checks for all Bay Transit employees at the beginning of their shift every day, including checking for COVID-19 symptoms and taking their temperature.
  • All buses are being disinfected several times a day.
  • On demand service is available throughout the service area from Monday through Friday from 6 AM to 6 PM.
  • As customers call in to schedule rides, they are pre-screened.
  • To facilitate social distancing while on the bus, we limit buses to a maximum of three people and have seats taped off to keep riders separated and away from the bus driver and other riders.
  • In coordination with area hospitals, Bay Transit has suspended stops at Urgent Care facilities and hospitals along our fixed route lines in Gloucester and Essex County.
  • As customers call in to schedule rides, we are asking them to limit travel to essential rides to work, medical appointments, the bank and shopping for necessities.
  • Whenever possible, we are asking riders to wear face masks while riding on Bay Transit buses.

CANCELLATION AND NO-SHOW POLICY

In order to better serve our riders Bay Transit has instituted a no-show policy:

Three (3) no-shows or five (5) same-day cancellations within a six month period will result in a 30 day suspension of riding privileges or a $25.00 dollar fine.

When you schedule a ride with Bay Transit it often means another person cannot be scheduled at the same time. When you cancel at the last minute or do not show up for the ride you have taken a seat away from another rider. The no-show and cancellation policy is meant to help us prevent this from happening.

We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you.

Ken Pollock

Transit Director
